�G�del Leaves Vienna� was written in the Fall and Winter of 2005�06. The piece was inspired by a passage from fellow Minnesotan Bob Dylan�s book Chronicles:

"If you�re using the [diatonic] scale, and you hit 2, 5 and 7 to the phrase and then repeat it, a melody forms."

I came up with a 12-tone row based on what I thought Dylan might have meant by this passage (like many other things Dylan has said, what exactly he meant has been a subject of heated debate in online Dylan forums), and used this in writing the bass part. (I also thought of calling this piece �Desolation Row�, but that seemed a bit obvious.)
